The State Capital Improvement Budget has allocated $800,000 for the following project: "Kalanianaole Highway Widening and/or Realignment, Waimanalo Town: Plans for widening and/or realignment of Kalanianaole Highway extending from Olomana Golf Course to the Waimanalo Beach Park. This project is deemed necessary to qualify for Federal aid financing and/or reimbursement."
Department of Transportation Planner Kenneth Au says the scope of work for the plan has not yet been determined. Because of other priorities and low state staffing, the earliest start date for the study is next year. An earlier study proposed three alternatives: a mauka route along Hihimanu Street, a makai route through Bellows, and widening the existing highway. The new study is not bound to follow the old study but will look at those alternatives and others in more depth, considering environmental and engineering aspects. According to Au, DOT is open to working with the community.
