** Rainbows Edge Rebels **
Hawaii withstood a fierce rally by Nevada-Las Vegas to edge the
Rebels, 66-64, in a Western Athletic Conference men's basketball
game last night at the Special Events Arena. The Rainbows led by
seven with a minute to play and barely hung on for the win.
UNLV's Jermaine Smith missed a layup a split second before the
final buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime. "That
thing was just sitting there," said UH forward Micah Kroeger of
Smith's final shot. "I was begging for it to fall off." Anthony
Carter (16), Alika Smith (21) and Seth Sundberg (12) scored in
double figures for Hawaii (15-4 overall and 7-2 WAC). Sundberg
added 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. UNLV dropped to 13-7 and
5-4.
** Wahine Romp **
The UH Wahine crushed UNLV, 72-46, in a WAC women's basketball
game last night in Las Vegas. Nani Cockett scored 18 points and
handcuffed the Rebels' leading scorer, Tody Girard, holding her
to just six points. BJ Itoman (14), Kendis Leeburg (13), and
Raylene Howard (12) also scored in double figures for Na Wahine

** 'Bows Beat Gauchos **
The sixth-ranked UH men's volleyball team put a halt to a two-
match losing streak by sweeping No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, 13, 7,
and 13 last night in front of 5,391 fans at the Special Events
Arena. "Compared to how we were on the road trip, this was a
quantum leap into the land of lucidity," quipped UH coach Mike
Wilton after the match. Jason Ring slammed 19 kills for the
'Bows (5-3). Hawaii's Israel connection, Naveh Milo and Sivan
Leoni, added 14 apiece. The teams will meet again tomorrow night
in a match that will count in the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation standings.
** Na Wahine Sign Three **
Getting "the three people we wanted the most," is how UH Wahine
volleyball coach Dave Shoji described his 1997 recruiting
campaign. The newest Na Wahine, all outside hitters and all
members of Volleyball Magazine's Fab 50, are Punahou's Tehani
Miyashiro (5-7), Jessica Sudduth (6-2), and Jameka Stevens (5-

"These three will be able to step in, if not next year, the year
after," said Shoji.

** UH Trio Suspended **
UH basketball players Aaron Curry, Quentin Gallon, and Kelvin
Anderson were suspended yesterday for violating a university
Student-Athlete Handbook rule. The specific violation and the
length of the trio's suspension was not revealed in a university
press release yesterday. What's more, neither the suspended
players nor UH officials would comment about the specifics of the
matter. "I feel sad for them a little bit," said Anthony Carter,
the Rainbows' top player. "We have to stay focused on the
season." Curry, Gallon and Anderson are not expected to suit up

++Mahalo to Valentine Garcia for the write-up.
Boys' Basketball: Kapaa's boys basketball team is 6-0. The tightest
game this year was 18 points. They have won by a 97-49 score. They are
champs and going to states this month. The players to watch are Kawaihau
Torio and Brent Inoye.
----
Girls' soccer: Kapaa's girls are 5-0 with only one goal scored on
all year. They are big time contenders for the state championship, I
think they will pull it off. They are also going to states this month
and they are led by Andrea Alflier, Arlene Devit and Cristy Marti who
just came back from Iolani because she didn't like the atmosphere.
----
Boys' soccer: There was a three way 2-2 tie record between all the
schools. But last weeks Waimea beat Kauai 4-2 with the help of Sean
Jardin's two goals. Jardin is the best player for Waimea, but he broke
his leg in that game and now is lost for the season. Last night
Kapaa beat Waimea 4-1 with goals from Jake Youn, Matt Tinder, Matias
Garcia and Squanto Nakagoshi. Garcia, Nick Hill (2) and John Lopez had
the assist's for the Warriors. Now the Warriors control their own
destiny, with a win on Saturday they will be champions and will go on to
the state tournament. A loss by Kapaa will make a three way tie, at 3-3
records. If there is a tie, there will be a playoff. Don't look
forward to a Kapaa loss because they look to be healthy and ready for
Kauai, so look forward to Kapaa going to the state tournament. The
Kapaa Warriors are lead by Matt Tinder, Jason Nomi, and Nick Hill.

** Bears Bash 'Bows **
Freshman Curtis Johnson ripped a grand slam homer in the sixth
inning to break a 3-all tie to lead California past Hawaii, 11-3,
in a college baseball game last night at Rainbow Stadium. The
loss dropped the Rainbows to 1-8, their worst start ever. With
the bases full and looking at an 0-2 count, Johnson, the ninth
batter in the Bears' lineup, slammed a changeup from Dusty
Bergman over the leftfield wall. California (2-1) never looked
back thereafter. "I couldn't believe it," said UH coach Les
Murakami. "You don't throw a change to the No. 9 batter. After
that, we called the pitches." Andrew McNally, Hawaii's best
pitcher, takes to the mound in tonight's series closer in an
attempt to salvage some face for the 'Bows.

Wallace's men defeated the Spartans 87-74 at San Jose last night
to improve to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Western Athletic
Conference, good enough to lead the league's Pacific Division.
Anthony Carter dropped in 21 points and dished out 7 assists for
the 'Bows. Over at the Special Events Arena, Vince Goo's Na
Wahine hoopsters improved to 14-4 overall and 7-1 WAC by drubbing
the Lady Spartans, 69-51. Point guard BJ Itoman (17 points) was
one of five Wahine scoring in double figures. Meanwhile, losing
yesterday were the baseball and men's volleyball teams.
California edged the baseball 'Bows (1-7), 6-5 at Rainbow
Stadium. Greg Millichap had 2 of Hawaii's six hits. And in
California, Pepperdine beat the men's volleyball team (4-2
overall and 3-1 conference), 15-13, 8-15, 15-6, 17-16, at
Pepperdine.

** 'Bows, Spartans Meet Tonight **
Leading the Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division with a
5-1 mark (13-3 overall), the UH men's basketball team will take
on San Jose State (1-5 WAC) tonight at the San Jose State Event
Center. UH coach Riley Wallace said SJS officials have denied
his team the right to practice at the game site, a violation of
WAC rules. "They're trying to do everything they can to throw us
off," said guard Alika Smith.
** Wahine Basketball News **
The UH Wahine basketball team (13-4 overall, 6-1 WAC) will tackle
San Jose State (6-12, 1-6) tonight at the Special Events Arena.
UH players Nani Cockett and BJ Itoman are among the national
leaders in scoring average and free throw percentage. Cockett, a
former Kamehameha all-stater, is averaging 19.4 points per game,
43rd best in the NCAA, and Itoman, a former Iolani star, has the
country's 10th best free percentage (87.2). What's more, Cockett
leads the Western Athletic Conference in blocks (2 per game) and
Raylene Howard has the league's best three-point percentage
(.619).
** UH Baseball Report **
Sean Murphy (.400), David Perreira (.357), Robert Medeiros
(.346), Neal Honma (.333), and Daren Masanda (.310) are the
leading hitters for the UH baseball team (1-6), which opens a
three-game series against California (0-1) tonight at Rainbow
Stadium. Murphy and Perreira are true freshmen. UH coach Les
Murakami said despite a less-than-glowing record to-date, the
tough early season competition will pay dividends for his team,
particularly his youth-laden pitching corps. "I feel it's a
matter of time and experience," Murakami said. Freshmen Jamie
Aloy and Dusty Bergman are scheduled to start two of the three
games in the series.
** UH Football Report **
The UH football team received verbal commitments from two players
from the mainland yesterday. Announcing their intention to play
for the Rainbows were Charles Tharp, a running back from St.
Francis High School (Mountain View, Calif.), and Rinda Brooks, a
defensive back from New Mexico Military Institute. The 5-9, 185-
pound Tharp rushed for over 2,000 yards in his senior season and
is described as "a good receiver and a great blocker" by his high
school coach. This past season from his safety position, Brooks
(6-0, 215 pounds) had five interceptions, returning one for a
touchdown.

** 'Bows Tame Lions **
Giving some credence to their claim that they are a better team
than last year, the UH men notched an impressive 15-6, 15-12, 5-
15, 15-10 triumph over Penn State in Outrigger Hotels Volleyball
Invitational match last night in front of 8,040 fans at the

off a spirited Laval (Canada) team, 15-6, 14-16, 15-7, 13-15,
15-10. The tournament concludes tonight with UH (4-0) taking on
UCLA and Laval squaring off against Penn State.
** Baseball 'Bows Bashed Again **
Tom Jacquez allowed just one hit in eight innings of work to
spark UCLA to a 10-0 victory over a hapless University of Hawaii
baseball team last night in front of 1,373 fans at Rainbow
Stadium. The Bruins, ranked second in the country, improved to
2-0. Hawaii fell to 1-5. The series concludes with a single
game tonight.
** Yusho to Wakanohana **
Ozeki Wakanohana captured the championship of the Tokyo Grand
Sumo Tournament by defeating yokozuna Akebono (Chad Rowan) last
night. Wakanohana (14-0) used a leg trip to down the grand
champion from Hawaii (12-2). In other matches of note, grand
champion Takanohana (12-2), Wakanohana's younger brother,
defeated ozeki Musashimaru [Fiamalu Penitani] (11-3), Yamato
[George Kalima] (7-7) topped Mitoizumi, and Konishiki (8-6) fell
to Asanosho. The tournament concludes tonight.

** 'Bows Level Laval **
Jason Ring ripped 16 kills and Aaron Wilton and Sivan Leoni added
13 and 10, respectively, to lead the UH men's volleyball team to
a 15-4, 15-7, 15-11 win over Laval of Canada last night in first
round game of Outrigger Hotels Invitational. A Special Events
Arena crowd of 5,848 was on hand. In an earlier game, Penn State
looked impressive in beating defending national champion UCLA,
15-11, 15-11. 14-16, 15-5. The round robin tournament continues
tonight with the Rainbows taking on Penn State and Laval meeting
UCLA.
** Bruins Bash Bows **
UCLA pounded out 22 hits in a 23-11 college baseball romp over
the University of Hawaii last night at Rainbow Stadium. The
number of runners crossing home plate tied the UH record for most
runs allowed, set in a 23-6 loss to Oklahoma in 1975. Asked to
comment about the game, UH coach Les Murakami said, "We swung the
bat well. Eleven runs should be enough to win any game." Not
against the powerful Bruins (1-0), who rapped out 12 extra base
hits, including a three-run homer by Troy Glaus in the second
inning and a grandslam round-tripper by Nick Theodorou in the
fifth. UH starting pitcher Robby Robinson was rocked for 11 hits
and 10 runs in three and a third innings of work. Neal Honma,
Robert Medeiros, and Sean Murphy paired hits for Hawaii (3-4).
The three-game series continues tonight.
** Sumo Day 13 Report **

Kotonowaka (7-6), yokozuna Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan)
forced out ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), and
yokozuna Takanohana dispatched of Kaio (4-9). Earlier Yamato

** Sumo Day 12 Report **
Hawaii wrestlers Akebono and Musashimaru, both 11-1, trail
Wakanohana by a match after 12 days of competition in the Tokyo
New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. Yesterday, Akebono (Waimanalo's
Chad Rowan) easily dispatched of Takanonami (5-7) while
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) was nearly forced out by
Tamakasuga (3-9) before rallying. Wakanohana (12-0) topped
Kotonishiki (4-8). In other matches, Konishiki (8-4--Salevaa
Atisanoe of Nanakuli) defeated Rikio (7-5), Yamato (5-7--George
Kalima of Waimanalo) ousted Minatofuji (4-8), and grand champion
Takanohana (10-2) overpowered Kitakachidoki (5-7).
** Baseball 'Bows Battle Bruins **
After losing three of four games to No. 4 Miami last week, things
won't get easier for the UH baseball team when the Rainbows take
on No. 2 UCLA in a three-game series that starts tonight at
Rainbow Stadium. Entering the series, the biggest question mark
for the 'Bows is their pitching corps, pounded hard by the
Bruins. Making matters worse is that Hawaii's top pitcher,
Andrew McNally, may miss the Bruin series because of pulled groin
muscle. McNally, who pitched for the Australian Olympic team
last year and packed on 20 pounds of muscle via an off-season
weightlifting and running regimen, was the only starting pitcher
who hurled effectively against UCLA last week. "We're hoping he
can pitch this week, but we're not going to take any chances,"
said Hawaii coach Les Murakami.
** Kapule Mows 'Em Down **
The state's top premiere girls' softball player, Pomai Kapule of
Kailua High, fanned 14 of 15 batters she faced in 23-0 five-
inning perfect game victory over Kaimuki yesterday at Keolu
Field. A multiple state player of the year honoree, Kapule, a
senior southpaw, fanned 10 straight Bulldog players at one point
yesterday. Kailua, which also got a perfect game from Hauoli
Kaaihue-Hughes on Saturday against Farrington, improved to 8-1.
Kaimuki dropped to 1-8.

** V-Ball 'Bows Host Tourney **
Defending NCAA champion UCLA, Penn State, and Laval (Canada) will
join host University of Hawaii men in the 1997 Outrigger Hotels
Volleyball Invitational starting tomorrow at the Special Events
Arena. In the current national rankings, the Bruins are ranked
second, the Rainbows third, and the Nittany Lions fifth. Laval
is a three-time winner of the Canadian national championship. In
opening round matches of the round robin tournament, UH will meet
Laval, Penn State will take on UCLA. Saturday night's UH-UCLA
match is nearly a sellout.
** Sumo Day 11 Report **

Wakanohana stands alone atop the leader board of the Tokyo New
Year Grand Sumo Tournament with an 11-0 mark. His former co-
leaders, yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad
Rowan) and ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), both
lost yesterday and fell to 10-1. At 9-2 is grand champion
Takanohana, the brother of Wakanohana. Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe) won to improve to 7-4 while Yamato (Waimanalo's
George Kalima) lost, falling to 4-7.
** Harrington Passes Away **
Farrington grad and former local boxing great Stan Harrington,
63, died on Sunday in Orlando, Fla., where he had been living in
retirement. Harrington compiled a 64-18-3 mark in the ring and
was the big draw for local fight fans in the late 50s through the
mid-60s, notching wins over, among others, the Hurricane Kid and
Sugar Ray Robinson. "He was a savior for boxing back then," said
former Hawaii boxing official Bobby Lee. Harrington is survived
by his wife, Dianne, eight children, 19 grandchildren, and 2
great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Florida.

Kamehameha lineman Steven Grace has verbally committed to play
football for Arizona next season. The 6-2, 270-pounder said he
chose the Wildcats because of "the academic possibilities and the
facilities in general." Grace is the ninth local player to
commit to a mainland college in recent weeks. Only one, Pac-Five
lineman Chris Smith, has said he will play for the University of
Hawaii.

** UH Grid Aide Bags **
University of Hawaii assistant football coach Trent Miles
announced yesterday that he has accepted a coaching position at
Fresno State for the coming season. Miles coached the defensive
secondary for the Rainbows the past two seasons and will coach
the receivers for the Bulldogs. He said he accepted the position
with FSU two weeks ago but held off announcing the job switch so
as not to hinder UH's recruiting efforts. Former Kaiser High, UH
and NFL player Rich Miano is being mentioned as a possible
candidate for Miles' job. "I'm interested in sitting down and
seeing what it entails," Miano said.
** Utes Grab More Local Gridders **
Punahou receiver Tafiti Uso, the Honolulu Advertiser's 1996 High
School Offensive Player of the Year, and Kahuku lineman Maake
Kemoeatu have verbally committed to play for Utah next season.
About a month ago, St. Louis High safety Wes Tufaga, the state's
Defensive Player of the Year, also committed to the Utes. The
trio, who will have to wait until next month to sign letters of
intent, will join a host of former local prep stars at Utah,
including quarterback Darnell Arceneaux and running back Chris
Fuamatu-Maafala from St. Louis, linebackers Kautai Olevao from
Kahuku and Taulia Lave from Waianae, and receiver Donny Utu from
Punahou.
** Francis Sacked by KGMB **
Yesterday, former Kailua High and NFL player Russ Francis was

sagging ratings. After completing his NFL career and prior to
his KGMB stint, Francis worked for KUGN Radio in Eugene, Oregon,
ESPN, and ABC-TV. He could not be reached for comment.

assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals in WAC victories over Colorado
State and Wyoming last week. "I just play," said the low-key
Carter.

** Basketball 'Bows Victorious **
The UH men and women won Western Athletic Conference games over
Wyoming on Saturday night. Anthony Carter poured in 22 points to
lead the men to a 70-58 triumph over the Cowboys at the Special
Events Arena. Meanwhile, far away in Laramie, Wyoming, Nani
Cockett scored seven of Na Wahine's 12 points in overtime to lead
Hawaii past the Cowgirls, 81-78. With the wins, the men improved
to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the WAC and the Wahine to 12-3 and
5-1.
** 'Bows Drop Two to 'Canes **
At Rainbow Stadium, the University of Hawaii baseball team
dropped a pair of games to nationally-ranked Miami of Florida,
10-7 on Saturday and 13-11 yesterday. The victories gave the
Hurricanes a 3-1 sweep of the season-opening four-game series.
UH dropped to 1-3. The Rainbows' lack of pitching depth was
evident in the losses as the Hurricanes pounded UH hurlers for 16
hits on Saturday and 12 more yesterday. Sean Murphy and Neal
Honma had three hits apiece for Hawaii yesterday. Things won't
get easier for the 'Bows as second-ranked UCLA arrives in town in
a few days for another weekend series.
** Sumo Day 9 Report **
Akebono (Waimanalo's Salevaa Atisanoe), Musashimaru (Waianae's
Fiamalu Penitani), and Wakanohana continued their winning ways,

Tournament. Two other Hawaii competitors, Konishiki (Nanakuli's
Salevaa Atisanoe) and Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima) are 5-4
and 4-5, respectively. Grand champion Takanohana is 7-2.

Louis) who had 2 receptions for 33 yards, Washington linebacker
Ink Aleaga (Pac-Five/Maryknoll) who had seven tackles, Oregon
offensive lineman Tasi Malepeai (St. Louis) who played the entire
game, and UH defensive back Doe Henderson who had two tackles.
Colorado offensive lineman Chris Naeole (Kahuku) did not play
because of illness.
** Smith Commits to 'Bows **
Yesterday, Pac-Five lineman Chris Smith became the first of what
UH football coach Fred vonAppen hopes will be many local prep
stars to commit to play for Hawaii next season. Smith, who will
be able to sign a letter of intent on Feb. 5, is 6-foot-2, 265
pounds and earned second team All-ILH honors as a defensive
lineman this season. He is projected to play on the offensive
line for the 'Bows.

** 'Canes Storm 'Bows **
The vaunted Miami offense awoke last night as the Hurricanes
pounded Hawaii, 14-7, in a college baseball game played in front
of 1,875 fans at Rainbow Stadium. Miami parlayed four walks, a
single and a double into four runs in top of the seventh to break
a 7-all tie. The game took four hours to complete and included
25 walks and seven errors. Both teams are 1-1. The series
continues today with a single game.
** 'Bows Notch Uninspired Win **
A Special Events Arena crowd of 6,521 watched the UH men's
volleyball team sleepwalk past a fired up UC-San Diego squad, 15-
5, 15-7, 11-15, 15-10, last night. The Rainbows (2-0) are ranked
third in NCAA Division I while the Tritons (0-2) compete in
Division III. "We weren't focused," a disappointed UH coach Mike
Wilton said. Aaron Wilton knocked down 15 kills for the 'Bows,
and Naveh Milo and Jason Ring chipped in 14 apiece. The Rainbows
return to action next Thursday when they host the Outrigger
Hotels Invitational. Defending national champion UCLA and Final
Four qualifier Penn State are also entered.
** Sumo Day 7 Report **
The beat rolled on for Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo),
Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), and Wakanohana
yesterday, as each won to improve to 7-0 in the Tokyo New Year
Grand Sumo Tournament. Grand champion Akebono used his patented
hand thrusts to dispatch of Tamakasuga (2-5) while ozekis
(champions) Musashimaru and Wakanohana triumphed over Kenko (2-5)
and Tosanoumi (4-3), respectively. In earlier bouts, two other
Hawaii rikishi won. Konishiki [4-3] (Nanakuli's Salevaa
Atisanoe) shoved out Daihisho (4-3), and Yamato [3-4]
(Waimanalo's George Kalima) topped Daizen (3-4). Grand champion
Takanohana improved to 5-2 by beating Asahiyutaka (3-4).
** 'Bow Hoopsters Play Tonight **
UH will take on Wyoming in men's and women's Western Athletic
Conference basketball games tonight. The UH men (11-3 overall
and 3-1 WAC) will host Wyoming (5-9, 1-2) at the Special Events
Arena while Na Wahine (11-4, 4-1) will meet the Cowgirls (10-5,
2-2) in cold environs of Laramie, Wyoming.
** High School Basketball Scoreboard **
Top-ranked Iolani used an 11-0 third quarter run to pull away to
a 42-31 Interscholastic League of Honolulu triumph over No. 4 St.
Louis last night at Iolani Gym. Derek Christensen, a 6-4 guard,
scored 20 points to pace the Raiders (5-0). Kaweo Feeney, the
league's leading scorer (15.0) entering the game, was limited to
just 10 by an aggressive Raider defense. St. Louis fell to 4-1.
