Miami parlayed four walks, a single and a double into four runs in top of the seventh to break a 7-all tie. The game took four hours to complete and included 25 walks and seven errors. Both teams are 1-1. The series continues today with a single game. ** 'Bows Notch Uninspired Win ** A Special Events Arena crowd of 6,521 watched the UH men's volleyball team sleepwalk past a fired up UC-San Diego squad, 15- 5, 15-7, 11-15, 15-10, last night. The Rainbows (2-0) are ranked third in NCAA Division I while the Tritons (0-2) compete in Division III. "We weren't focused," a disappointed UH coach Mike Wilton said. Aaron Wilton knocked down 15 kills for the 'Bows, and Naveh Milo and Jason Ring chipped in 14 apiece. The Rainbows return to action next Thursday when they host the Outrigger Hotels Invitational. Defending national champion UCLA and Final Four qualifier Penn State are also entered. ** Sumo Day 7 Report ** The beat rolled on for Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo), Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), and Wakanohana yesterday, as each won to improve to 7-0 in the Tokyo New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. Grand champion Akebono used his patented hand thrusts to dispatch of Tamakasuga (2-5) while ozekis (champions) Musashimaru and Wakanohana triumphed over Kenko (2-5) and Tosanoumi (4-3), respectively. In earlier bouts, two other Hawaii rikishi won. Konishiki [4-3] (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) shoved out Daihisho (4-3), and Yamato [3-4] (Waimanalo's George Kalima) topped Daizen (3-4). Grand champion Takanohana improved to 5-2 by beating Asahiyutaka (3-4). ** 'Bow Hoopsters Play Tonight ** UH will take on Wyoming in men's and women's Western Athletic Conference basketball games tonight. The UH men (11-3 overall and 3-1 WAC) will host Wyoming (5-9, 1-2) at the Special Events Arena while Na Wahine (11-4, 4-1) will meet the Cowgirls (10-5, 2-2) in cold environs of Laramie, Wyoming. ** High School Basketball Scoreboard ** Top-ranked Iolani used an 11-0 third quarter run to pull away to a 42-31 Interscholastic League of Honolulu triumph over No. 4 St. Louis last night at Iolani Gym. Derek Christensen, a 6-4 guard, scored 20 points to pace the Raiders (5-0). Kaweo Feeney, the league's leading scorer (15.0) entering the game, was limited to just 10 by an aggressive Raider defense. St. Louis fell to 4-1. ==Other Scores from Last Night== Punahou 74, Damien 48 University 47, Kamehameha 35 Roosevelt 43, Kalani 41 Kalaheo 64, Kahuku 45 Farrington 51, Castle 49 Kaiser 60, McKinley 51 Kaimuki 56, Kailua 43 St. Louis II 68, Hawaii Baptist 59 Kamehameha II 60, University II 36 Punahou II 75, Lutheran 37 Iolani II 45, Mid-Pacific 33 ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 3 to 5 feet South shore: 1 to 2 feet

Andrew McNally pitched eight strong innings and shortstop Key Voshell rapped out three hits to spark the baseball 'Bows to 3-2 10-inning win over No. 4 Miami of Florida at Rainbow Stadium. A crowd of 1,303 watched the game. Voshell's fielder's choice grounder to short scored catcher Robert Medeiros from third in the bottom of the tenth for the game-winning run. Troy Yoshimasu pitched two innings of relief to earn the win. The game was the season- opener for both teams. Meanwhile, across the quarry at the Special Events Arena, the basketball 'Bows pounded Colorado State, 85-65, in front of 5,637 fans. Hawaii employed a 1-2-2 zone in the second half to cool down a torrid-shooting Ram squad (65% in the first half). The result: a four-point halftime lead mushroomed to the final 20-point margin. Alika Smith scored 22 points, 12 coming on three-pointers, and main-man Anthony Carter added 16 points and 9 assists, despite being saddled with foul problems. The win boosted the Rainbows to 11-3 overall and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. CSU fell to 11-4 and 1-2. ** Wahine Lose ** The UH Wahine basketball team's 10-game winning streak came to end last night at Fort Collins, Colo. when Hawaii lost to Colorado State, 84-73. The Lady Rams were unconscious from long distance, hitting 10 of 18 shots from beyond the arc. The Wahine trailed by as many as 14 in the second half before cutting the margin to 5 with seven minutes left. However, fouls and a hot- shooting CSU team (13-2 overall, 4-0 WAC) kept Na Wahine (11-4, 4-1) at bay. Four players scored in double figures for Hawaii, including Raylene Howard (18), Nani Cockett (17), BJ Itoman (15), and Kendis Leeburg (14). ** Sumo Day Six Report ** Grand champion Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), and champions Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and Wakanohana continued their winning ways, each notching their sixth victory in as many tries in the Tokyo New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. Akebono defeated Kenko (2-4), Musashimaru forced out Tochinowaka (1-5), and Wakanohana ousted Musoyama (1-5). Two other wrestlers from Hawaii were also victorious, Konishiki [3-3] (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) topping Daishi and Yamato [2-4] (Waimanalo's George Kalima) beating Chiyotaikai. ** Small College Basketball ** After rude treatment on mainland road trips last week (1-7 overall), all four local small college basketball teams won last night after returning to the friendly and hospitable atmosphere of home gyms. ==Last night's Results== Hawaii Pacific 88, Lewis-Clark State 54 BYU-Hawaii 89, Central Washington 83 UH-Hilo 92, Seattle Pacific 76 Chaminade 68, Chapman 53 ** High School Basketball Scoreboard ** ==Last Night's Games== Aiea 49, Radford 47 Campbell 56, Waianae 42 Moanalua 54, Leilehua 40 Nanakuli 68, Mililani 50 Waipahu 59, Waialua 39 ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 3 to 5 feet South shore: 1 to 2 feet

A crowd of 5,687 was on hand to see the season-opener for both teams. The third-ranked Rainbows cruised effortlessly through the first two games but when UH coach Mike Wilton cleared his bench in the third, the Tritons found a crack in the Rainbow armor, serving for the game four times before being toppled by a Hawaii rally. "I don't think we were expecting them to play at such a high level in that game," said Hawaii backup setter Mason Kuo, who took over for starter Curt Vaughn midway through game 2. Clay Stanley, a 6-9 freshman middle blocker, pounded 11 kills to lead the 'Bows. Returnees Aaron Wilton and Naveh Milo added 9 apiece. The two teams meet again tomorrow night. ** Sumo Day 5 Report ** Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), and Wakanohana remained unbeaten and tied for the lead after five days of the Tokyo New Year Grand Sumo Tournament. Yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono downed Asahiyutaka (2-3), (ozeki) champion Musashimaru overpowered Kotonishiki (0-5), and fellow ozeki Wakanohana defeated Kyokushuzan (2-3). In other bouts, Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima) defeated Kotobeppu to improve to 1-4; Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) lost to Tochiazuma to fall to 2-3; and grand champion Takanohana was upset by Tochinowaka and dropped to 3-2. ** Ram Test for Na Kane, Na Wahine ** The UH men's basketball team (10-3) hosts Colorado State (11-3) in a WAC game tonight at the Special Events Arena. The Rams, who rely mostly on a sticky match-up zone on defense, lead the conference in lowest field goal percentage allowed (.358). "They can be scary," said UH assistant and head scout Jeff Law. ---- Meanwhile, a couple thousand miles away at Fort Collins, Colo. (elevation 7,200 feet), the UH Wahine (11-3) will meet CSU (12-2) in a WAC women's game. "We had a good practice and the altitude didn't affect us," guard BJ Itoman said. "We're hoping to play like we're at home." The Rams return three starters from last season's nationally-ranked team. ** McGuire Speedier, Thanks to Girlfriend ** BYU receiver Kaipo McGuire, in town for this Sunday's Hula Bowl, attributes his increased speed this season to early morning training sessions conducted by his girlfriend Wendy Jorgensen, the WAC indoor track champion at 55- and 200-meters. The former St. Louis High all-state performer said his 40-yard dash time dropped two-tenths of a second to 4.38 thanks to footwork and running-mechanics training provided by Jorgensen at a.m. workouts at the BYU fieldhouse. McGuire caught 42 passes for 658 yards and five touchdowns for the Cougars this season. ** UH Football Report ** Defensive coordinator Don Lindsey said he will return for another season and several starters have yet to enroll for spring classes at UH. Lindsey, who was given a raise, said he is staying because "like (UH head coach) Fred (vonAppen), I think we both share the motivation in wanting to see this (program) get better." Meanwhile, offensive lineman Iosefa Pua'auli, defensive back Steve Laulu, and linebacker Branch Nautu have not yet registered for spring courses at Manoa. The spring semester began on Monday and the trio, all starters during the 1996 season, have until 1/24 to enroll or else they risk losing their eligibility. ** Murakami Says He'll Play Patsies if Bows Don't Draw ** UH baseball coach Les Murakami said he'll wait to see how many fans attend this weekend's series against national power Miami of Florida to determine if he should continue scheduling strong teams for early season games. The baseball 'Bows, not as formidable or as popular as in years past, face stiff competition for fans from the Rainbow men's basketball and volleyball programs. Said Murakami: "It comes down to this: If we draw, we know we should continue to play the best. But if we don't, and with what it costs to bring in the good teams, then maybe we should play teams that will help us build up our record." Game one of the four game series against the Hurricanes is tonight at Rainbow Stadium. ** High Basketball Scoreboard ** ==Last night's games== McKinley 57, Kailua 48 Kahuku 54, Farrington 50 Kaiser 50, Kalani 38 Kalaheo 54, Roosevelt 45 Castle 71, Kaimuki 50 ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 3 to 5 feet South shore: 1 to 2 feet

The 6-6, 275-pounder, who had considered Stanford, Colorado, and UCLA in addition to the Wildcats, was also named a Parade All-American yesterday. "I wanted the best academic and athletic package I could find," Souza said. Grand champion Akebono, formerly Chad Rowan of Waimanalo, outmuscled Musoyama (1-3) while ozekis (champions) Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) and Wakanohana defeated Takatoriki (3-1) and Tamakasuga (3-1), respectively. Grand champion Takanohana (3-1) was upset by Tosamoumi (3-1). In earlier matches, two other wrestlers from Hawaii lost, Konishiki (2-2) to Misugisato (3-1) and Yamato (0-4) to Daishi (3-1). ** Hula Rosters Set ** Five players with Hawaii ties will play in this Sunday's Hula Bowl at Aloha Stadium. They are Colorado offensive lineman Chris Naeole (Kahuku), Washington linebacker Ink Aleaga (Maryknoll, Pac-Five), BYU receiver Kaipo McGuire (St. Louis), Oregon offensive guard Tasi Malepeai (St. Louis), and UH defensive back Demetrius Henderson. UH coach Fred vonAppen relinquished an assistant's spot for the game, saying that he had to tend to recruiting matters for his Rainbow team. Three national award winners also will play, including Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel of Florida, Walter Payton Award winner (best player in NCAA 1AA) Archie Amerson of Northern Arizona, and Biletnikoff Awardee (Best Receiver) Marcus Harris of Wyoming. ** Brighter 'Bows to Battle Rams ** The UH Rainbows (10-3 overall and 2-1 league) will host Colorado State (11-3, 1-1) in a men's Western Athletic Conference basketball game tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. UH players credit part of their success to the work of team tutor Madhu Sharma, who helped several players, including starters Alika Smith and Micah Kroeger, avoid becoming academic casualties. "If it wasn't for her, we'd probably have five guys on the team," Smith said. "She kept us on our feet." ** Major League Baseball in Honolulu? ** Arrangements are almost complete for a major league baseball regular season series between the San Diego Padres and the Houston Astros to be played at Aloha Stadium on April 22 and 23. Negotiations are ongoing and favorable at this point," said Aloha Stadium spokesperson Les Keiter. "The `i's have to be dotted and the `t's crossed." Former Kaiser High player Sid Fernandez is on the Houston roster. The last games in Hawaii involving a major league team were in 1979 when San Diego, then the parent team of the Hawaii Islanders, played the Seibu Lions of the Japan League in a three-game exhibition series. ** Small College Basketball ** Hawaii's four small college men's basketball team went a combined 1-7 on recent mainland road swings. Hawaii Pacific's victory over St. Martin's (Wash.) prevented a shutout. "The road is where you separate the men from the boys," said HPU coach Tony Selitto. As a result of its two road losses, BYU-Hawaii (12-3) dropped from 3rd to 11th in the NAIA Basketball Poll released yesterday. Hawaii Pacific (14-2) went 1-1 last week and retained its No. 6 spot. Chaminade (2-9) and UH-Hilo (3-10) are unranked. ** High School Basketball Scores ** ==Last night's Results== Waipahu 38, Radford 37 Waianae 74, Waialua 43 Mililani 49, Aiea 48 Moanalua 59, Campbell 56 Leilehua 65, Pearl City 37 Kamehameha 48, Maryknoll 31 Kamehameha II 67, Maryknoll II 32 ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 4 to 8 feet South shore: 1 to 3 feet

The Florida Gator quarterback said he is here to play and not just on a vacation. Two weeks ago, Wuerffel played magnificently to lead Florida to a national-championship- clinching victory over Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. "He was just tremendous," said Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, here to coach the East squad. "I don't think I've ever faced a more accurate passer than Danny Wuerffel." Also arriving yesterday was former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz, who will lead the West squad. The game is set to begin at 11 a.m. (HST) at Aloha Stadium. ** Sumo Day Three Results ** Seven rikishi remain undefeated after three days of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Among the seven are two wrestlers from Hawaii, yokozuna (grand champion) Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo), who defeated Kyokushuzan (2-1), and ozeki (champion) Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani), who topped Akinoshima (1-2). Also unbeaten are grand champion Takanohana, ozekis Wakanohana and Takanonami, and Takatoriki and Rikio. In an earlier bout, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) improved to 2-1 by ousting Hamanoshima (0-3). The win was the 700th in Konishiki's career. A fourth Hawaii wrestler, Yamato, lost to Daishoho and fell to 0-3. ** Volleyball 'Bows Confident ** How good will the UH men's volleyball team be in the post-Yuval- Katz era? "Compared to last year, we're better," said returning middle blocker Sivan Leoni. Leoni's sentiments are echoed almost unanimously by his teammates and the Hawaii coaching staff. "Everybody got better," said UH coach Mike Wilton. "Some of them got way, way better." Among the players making the most improvement are hitters Jason Ring and Aaron Wilton, the coach's son. "It's a product of hard physical labor and the thought process of coming real close (the Bows lost to UCLA in the national championship match last season) and not quite getting it," coach Wilton said. UH will open its season tomorrow with a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match against UC-San Diego. Ring, Wilton, and Leoni will be joined in the starting lineup by Naveh Milo, Curt Vaughan, and 6-foot-9 freshman Clayton Stanley. ** Baseball 'Bows to Begin ** UH baseball coach Les Murakami says this year's team will hit well but may get hit just as hard. "This team is going to hit, no question," Murakami said. "But the pitching is a little thin." The Rainbows, 29-26 in 1996, will host perennial powerhouse and last year's NCAA runner-up, Miami of Florida (50- 14 in '96), in a four-game series that commences Thursday at Rainbow Stadium. Murakami said he plans to start Greg Millichap (.322), Darren Blakely (.290), and Neal Honma (.359) in the outfield. Infield starters include Michael Dartt (.149) at shortstop, Robert Medeiros (.338) at first, and newcomers Darren Masanda and Sean Murphy and second and third, respectively. Lars Hansen (.184) gets the starting nod at catcher. Andrew McNally (5-4, 4.69 ERA) and Robby Robinson (4-8, 6.08) are the top two pitchers. ** High School Sports News ** Undefeated ILH teams Iolani and St. Louis, both 4-0, will square off Friday night at Iolani in the top high school basketball match-up of the week. The Raiders, paced by Derek Christensen (11.8 points per game) and Akoni Ah Yat (10.3) are the state's top-ranked team while the Crusaders, led by Kaweo Feeney (15.0), are ranked fourth. The Saints have another tough game on Saturday when they take on No. 3 Punahou (3-1) at Punahou. The Buffanblu were ranked first until losing to Iolani last weekend. ---- Punahou swimmer Pia Chock swam to meet record in the 100-meter butterfly event at the Kalani Invitational last weekend. Her time of 57.03 seconds broke the previous mark of 58.57 set by Roosevelt's Kathy-Lyn Allen. ---- Kahuku offensive lineman Matt Parkhurst has verbally committed to play for Nevada-Las Vegas next season. The 6-3, 295-pounder had also received inquiries from BYU, Utah, Kansas, Iowa, among others. ** Oahu Surf Report ** North shore: 4 to 8 feet South shore: 1 to 3 feet

Anthony Carter's two free throws with a tick remaining on the game clock clinched the victory for the 'Bows (10-3 overall, 2-1 WAC). UNLV, which allegedly tried to ice the Rainbows by denying them practice time at Thomas and Mack and by subjecting the Hawaii team to a distracting pre-game laser light show, fell to 11-3 and 3-1. "This was unbelievable!" shouted Hawaii coach Riley Wallace after the game. "It's a tough one to swallow," countered UNLV coach Bill Bayno. Carter scored 19 points, grabbed 7 boards, and handed out 7 assists to spark UH. Micah Kroeger added 13 points and 5 rebounds. ** Wahine Whip 'Em ** The UH Wahine basketball team made it an 0-for-2 weekend for UNLV basketball, defeating the Lady Rebels, 77-59, in front of 1,311 fans at the Special Events Arena on Saturday night. Five players scored in double figures for Hawaii (11-3 overall and 4-0 WAC), including Kendis Leeburg (16), BJ Itoman (15), Liisa Kotilainen (12), Nani Cockett (11), and Brandi Ashby (10). UNLV fell to 2-13 and O-4. ** Alums Beat Baseball 'Bows ** Is the end in sight for UH baseball coach Les Murakami? Perhaps it is after an alumni team upset the current version of the Rainbows, 7-5, on Saturday night at Rainbow Stadium. Never before had the alumni team beaten the varsity since the game's inception in 1986. Rob Williams, who had never hit a homer while wearing the Rainbow green and white, rocked not one but two off varsity pitching on Saturday night. "I never hit one even in batting practice," said a jubilant Williams after the game. Jason Ross also homered for the alums, his 400-foot-plus clout arguably one of the longest hit at Rainbow Stadium. Robert Medeiros and Darren Blakeney went 2-for-4 for the varsity. ** Sumo Days 1 and 2 Results ** Hawaii's Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo) and Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waimanalo) are undefeated after two days of competition in the 15-day New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Also at 2-0 are, among others, grand champion Takanohana and champions Takanonami and Wakanohana. Two other Hawaii rikishi, Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) and Yamato (Waimanalo's George Kalima), are 1-1 and 0-2, respectively. ** Sports Shorts ** Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel of the Florida said he is considering sitting out the Hula Bowl because of sore right shoulder sustained in the Gator's national-championship-clinching Sugar Bowl victory over Florida State a week and a half ago. The Hula Bowl will be held this coming Sunday (1/19) at Aloha Stadium. ---- ==High School Boys' Basketball Results== ==Saturday's Games== Kalaheo 45, Kaiser 43 Roosevelt 44, Farrington 33 Moanalua 65, Waianae 53 Campbell 63, Nanakuli 62 Mililani 67, Waialua 36 Punahou 58, University 43 St. Louis 45, Kamehameha 27 Maryknoll 37, Damien 35 Molokai 60, Lahainaluna 54 Hilo 95, Kohala 73 Konawaena 69, Waiakea 52 Mid-Pacific 60, Kamehameha II 52 Lutheran 49, Maryknoll II 46 Hawaii Baptist 52, Iolani II 48 Punahou II 60, University II 42 ---- ==Small College Basketball Results== ==Saturday's Games== Western Washington 73, BYU-Hawaii 69 Hawaii Pacific 83, St. Martin's 66 Western New Mexico 81, UH-Hilo 76 (OT) Montana State-Billings 121, Chaminade 66 ---- Former Hawaii high school football players Chris Paogofie (Waianae '95), Rodwell Talaeai (Farrington '95), and Isaac White (Campbell '95) earned All-America honors at the junior college level this season. He earned $4,000 for the victory. Hawaii's Kainoa McGee ($3,200) finished second and Brazil's Daniel Rocha and South Africa's Alstair Taylor ($2,400 each) finished in a tie for third. ** Kalima Joins Big Boys ** Hawaii will have a fourth representative in sumo's highest division when Waimanalo's George Kalima, known as Yamato in the sumo world, competes in the Tokyo New Year's Tournament that kicks off tonight. Kalima, a 6-3, 440-pounder who has been competing for six years, amassed an 11-4 record at juryo 1 in the November tourney to gain promotion to makuuchi. Hawaii is also represented by grand champion Akebono (Chad Rowan of Waimanalo), champion Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae), and senior wrestler Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe). ** 'Bows Bop Alums ** The UH men's volleyball team, ranked third in Volleyball Magazine's preseason poll, easily subdued an alumni squad, 15-6, 15-9, 15-8, in an exhibition match last night at the Special Events Arena. A crowd of 5,264 was in attendance. Jason Ring registered 22 kills to lead the 'Bows. Naveh Milo and Aaron Wilton knocked down 13 apiece. "They were studly hitting for sure," said UH coach Mike Wilton of his big three. Eighteen players suited up for the alums, including Jason Olive ('91-'95) and Eric Pichel ('95-'96). Yuval Katz did not play. ** UH Hoops News ** The UH Wahine (10-3, 3-0) will take on Nevada-Las Vegas (2-12, 0- 3) in a WAC women's basketball game tonight at the Special Events Arena. UH coach Vince Goo said he expects a tougher game than the Wahine's Thursday night romp over Air Force. Meanwhile, over in gambling Mecca USA, Riley Wallace and the UH men's team (9-3, 1-1) will take on UNLV (11-2, 3-0) in a conference battle. The 'Bows hope to rebound from an unexpected loss to Air Force (5-6, 1-1) on Thursday. ** Baseball 'Bows Ready ** The UH baseball team will square off against an alumni squad tonight at Rainbow Stadium. "Everybody knows Hawaii doesn't like to play in altitude," said Falcons' center Mike Freeman. "That's why we ran every chance we could. We wanted to wear them down." And they did, rendering all the 'Bows into bumbling, tired heaps, except Anthony Carter (30 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists). "We didn't have anyone step up except Carter," said UH coach Riley Wallace, who watched his team fall to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. "We were lazy and tired and this is what happens." Air Force improved to 5-6 and 1-1. ** Na Wahine Win ** While their male counterparts struggled, the UH Wahine cruised, smothering Air Force, 77-46, in a women's WAC game last night at the Special Events Arena. The win was Hawaii's ninth in a row. Center Kendis Leeburg scored 23 points and snagged 9 boards to lead Na Wahine (10-3 overall, 3-0 WAC). Forward Nani Cockett added 16 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Said UH coach Vince Goo: "Our thing tonight was that we wanted to play well on every possession, defense and offense, no matter who was in the game." Ten of the eleven Wahine who played scored at least two points. ** Durham, '80 team Inducted Into UH Hall ** Former athletic director Paul Durham and the 1980 baseball team are the 1996 inductees into the University of Hawaii Hall of Honor. Durham, the head man of UH athletics from 1968 to 1975, is credited for laying the foundation for getting Rainbow athletics into the Division I level. He is retired and living in Waikiki. The 1980 baseball team, led by Ricky Bass, Howard Dashefsky, Chuck Crim, among others, came within a game of winning the NCAA championship. ** Small College Hoops ** All four of Hawaii's small college men's basketball teams were in action on the mainland yesterday, and all four lost. Game summaries are as follows: St. Martin's 77, BYU-Hawaii 74: At Lacey, Wash., the Seasiders (11-2), ranked third in the NAIA, were upset when St. Martin's Bill Sheed broke a 74-all tie with a three-pointer with six seconds remaining. ---- Western Washington 87, Hawaii Pacific 69: At Bellingham, Wash., the unranked Vikings topped the highly-touted Sea Warriors (13- 2), NAIA's 4th-ranked team. "What we have to learn is that any team can win at home, but the good ones win on the road," said HPU coach Tony Selitto. ---- Montana State-Billings 125, Hawaii-Hilo 80: At Billings, Montana, the Vulcans were routed. 'Nuff said. ---- Western New Mexico 45, Chaminade 43" At Silver City, N.M., Santiago Chavez's three-pointer late in the game helped the Mustangs (7-8) buck the Silverswords (2-8). ** Top Duo Eliminated at Pipe ** Bodyboarding's top two stars, Brazil's Guilherme Tamega and Hawaii's Mike Stewart, were eliminated from the Morey World Bodyboarding Championships yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline. Although Stewart fell, four other competitors from Hawaii advanced to the round of 16, including Lanson Ronquillio, Spencer Skipper, Kainoa McGee, and Nelz Vellocido. Initially, when the possibility of a strike neared, UH officials expressed concern that athletes might lose their eligibility since they would be unable to "enroll in a minimum of 12 credits" and "make progress toward a degree," necessary criteria for maintaining the right to compete on the NCAA level. But NCAA officials said the extenuating circumstances (the strike) would not be held against UH athletes. "There is a precedent for athletes continuing their eligibility in the event of a strike," said Steve Mallonee, NCAA director of legislative services. A long strike "might be a problem" said assistant UH athletic director Marilyn Moniz-Kahoohanohano, "but we'd feel that next semester." Based on negotiations last night, state officials and faculty union representatives are apparently close to an agreement so that the strike may be averted. ** Musashimaru Makes Yokozuna Bid ** Ozeki (champion) Musashimaru, also known as Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani, will be given strong consideration for sumo's highest rank of yokozuna (grand champion) if he wins the 15-day Hatsu Basho, set to begin this weekend in Tokyo. Musashimaru won the last tournament in November with an 11-4 record, emerging from a five-way tie on the final day by notching three consecutive wrestle-off matches. To win this time, he will have to dispatch of several strong rikishi, including tournament favorite and grand champion Takanohana, who sat out the November basho because of illness, and fellow local boy Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), also a grand champion. "I just have to go out there each day and try to win," said Musashimaru. "If I do that, my time will come." ** Can 'Bows Clip Falcons? Both the UH men and women will attempt to ground Air Force in Western Athletic Conference basketball games tonight. Na Kane (9-2 overall, 1-0 WAC) will take on the Falcons (4-6, 0-1) in the frigid, mile-high climes of Colorado Springs. "This is a no excuses tour," said forward Micah Kroeger. "We're not going to blame the altitude or the weather. We're just going to play." Meanwhile, Na Wahine will host the Lady Falcons at the Special Events Arena tonight. "We've had a good week of practice and need to play well to beat a disciplined Air Force team," said Wahine's coach Vince Goo. ** Morey Commences ** The Morey Bodyboarding World Championships got underway yesterday at the Banzai Pipeline, with 8 to 12 foot sets rolling through most of the day. While the meet's top seeds, including Brazil's Guilherme Tamega and Hawaii's Mike Stewart, watched from the beach after being given byes, competitors from South Africa dominated yesterday, winning five straight first round heats at one point. Meanwhile, several Hawaii bodyboarders advanced, including Harry Antipala, Jeff Hubbard, Kyle Maligro, Alex Kinimaka, and Robbie Gall. ** Football 'Bows Sign Seven ** UH football coach Fred vonAppen announced the signing of seven junior college players for the upcoming season. The Hurricanes are one of seven ranked teams penciled in on Hawaii's schedule. The others are No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 USC, No. 13 Wichita State, No. 22 Fresno State, No. 30 California, and No. 31 Washington. UH coach Les Murakami, entering his 27th season as baseball skipper, said such a strong schedule "is good for our team and good for the fans." When league play rolls around in March, Hawaii will compete in the Pacific Division of the Western Athletic Conference. Also in the division are San Diego State, Fresno State, and San Jose State. "There is no doubt we are in the strongest of the (WAC's) three divisions," said Murakami. ---- UH will play an exhibition game against an alumni squad on Saturday at Rainbow Stadium. Former Rainbow greats Derek Tatsuno and Randy Oyama will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. Tatsuno (1977-79), undoubtedly the best pitcher in UH history, will have his No. 16 officially retired. Oyama, a first baseman and NCAA record holder for most putouts in a career (2,070), will have his bronzed glove presented at home plate. ** Wahine Make the Grade ** The members of the UH Wahine basketball team not only shine on the court with a 9-3 record this season, but also in the classroom where they registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.23 out of 4.0 for the fall semester, tops amongst UH sports teams. Three Na Wahine earned all A's, including Tiffany Fujimoto (exercise science), Kendis Leeburg (elementary education) and Michelle Macintyre (secondary education). "It's like a snowball effect," said UH coach Vince Goo of his scholarly team. "A few in here study hard, and that's contagious, just like it is when you work hard on the floor." The Wahine host Air Force (3-9) in a WAC game tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. ** Small College Hoops ** BYU-Hawaii (11-1) is ranked third and Hawaii Pacific (13-1) sixth in the latest NAIA men's basketball poll released yesterday. He hit the game-winning free throws in an 86-84 semifinal win over Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, and then scored 18 points in the championship game victory over Ball State. ** Ex-Bow to Call Navy Offense ** Former Radford High and University of Hawaii football player Ken Niumatalolo was named offensive coordinator for the Navy football team yesterday. Niumatalolo, 31, will replace former UH offensive coordinator Paul Johnson, who leave the Midshipmen for the head coaching job at Georgia Southern. A backup to Warren Jones and Garrett Gabriel while at UH, Niumatalolo will become the first person of Samoan ancestry to occupy a football coordinator post on the Division IA level. Niumatalolo and Johnson will return to the Islands next week when Navy takes on California in the Holiday Bowl on Christmas morning. ** Kamali'i Showdown this Weekend? ** If the UH Wahine meets Nebraska for the NCAA women's volleyball title later this week, the match will be a showdown and reunion for two former members of Oahu's Kamali'i Volleyball Club. Wahine setter Robyn Ah Mow and Nebraska setter Fiona Nepo both developed their skills while playing for the Longy Okamoto- coached club. Because Ah Mow (McKinley '92) is two years older than Nepo (University High '94), the two played on different age- group teams for Kamali'i. In order for the matchup to materialize, the Wahine will have to defeat top-ranked Florida and the Cornhuskers must top Stanford in national semifinal matches on Thursday night. Both of Thursday's semifinal matches and Saturday's championship match will be televised live on ESPN2. ** Receiver Commits to 'Bows ** The UH football team's West Coast Offense received a potential boost when head coach Fred vonAppen announced that top-flight junior college receiver Wesley Morris of Golden West College (Calif.) had made a verbal commitment to play for the 'Bows next season. A 5-11, 185-pounder, Morris snagged 67 passes for 1,109 yards, third-best in the 70-team California JUCO football circuit. He is expected to enroll at UH next month. ** Sports Shorts ** Former UH volleyball star Yuval Katz will be back on Oahu this Friday for a promotional event for a local company. Yesterday afternoon, with tournament MVP Nani Cockett scoring 27 points and center Kendis Leeburg adding 15 more plus 13 rebounds, Na Wahine (4-3) defeated Santa Clara (5-2), 62-51, in the championship game of the Hawaii Invitational. Point guard BJ Itoman led a ferocious Wahine defensive charge, chipping in 13 points as well. Last night a crowd of 3,536 saw Na Kane (6-1) defeat Ball State (6-2), 83-75, in the title tilt of the Hawaii Nike Festival. Carter who scored 11 points and handed out 13 assists, many to fellow guard Alika Smith, who dropped in a team-high 23 points. ** Looong Honors to Herbert ** With a time of 1 hour, 52 minutes, 15 seconds, UH swim team member Paul Herbert won the 4.34-mile Hawaiian Christmas Looong Distance Swim yesterday morning in the waters off Waikiki Beach. Jamie Dvorak, an 18-year-old UH freshman, finished second overall in 1:53:54, winning wahine first-to-finish honors. Strong currents yesterday created less- than-ideal conditions for competitors. Former Iolani player Bern Brostek was also named to many All- American teams when he played for the University of Washington several years ago. ---- Kamehameha and Punahou won the girls' and boys' titles, respectively, at the Ka Makani Soccer Classic at Hawaii Prep Academy on the Big Island this past weekend. While Eric Ambrozich's two free throws with 1.7 seconds left should have been the highlight of the contest, a scuffle between UH center Seth Sundberg and SLO's Russ Bryden--both were ejected and suspended for one game--and vehement protests by Mustang coach Jeff Schneider--TV replays showed him yelling "Bull Shit" at referee Ed Ristau on several occasions--overshadowed Ambrozich's clutch performance. Less than two weeks ago, BYU upset UH for the WAC title. Last night, however, behind the powerful attacking of Angelica Ljungquist (9 kills), Joselyn Robins (10), and Therese Crawford (14), the spectacular defense and serving of Nalani Yamashita, and the setting of Robin Ah Mow, the Wahine refused to go down as they did to Michigan State in the regional final a year ago. "Not in our house," said a jubilant Chasity Nobriga after the match. "We've worked so hard for this," said Ljungquist. "I cannot tell you how good this feels." With the win, the Wahine earned their first spot in the Final Four since 1988. This Thursday, Hawaii (34-2) will take on top-ranked Florida (37-1) in a national semifinal match at Cleveland, Ohio. Florida's only loss of the season was to the Wahine in the season opener. ** East Wins Goodwill Game ** McKinley's Sol Lealao, Kaiser's Grant Sato, and Kaimuki's Jeremy Dunn stood in the spotlight last night, leading the East to a 35-0 romp over the West in the Building Trades Council Goodwill Football Classic last night at Aloha Stadium.
