"It was a struggle," said UH coach Dave Shoji. "We showed some courage in the fourth game. They had game-ball on us several times and we came back." Leading the comeback were Therese Crawford and Angelica Ljungquist, who had 25 and 23 kills respectively. Maria Roh paced New Mexico State (7-9) with 19 kills. Hawaii will return home for an 8-match homestand beginning with Cal State-Fullerton on Friday at the Special Events Arena. Americans Win Ironman Titles Using strong surges in the final marathon leg, Americans Mark Allen and Karen Smyers capture the men's and women's titles of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship at Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. Battling temperatures in the low-90s and 20-25 mile- per-hour winds, Allen and Smyers strided by their closest foes in the closing segments of the run. Allen, now a six-time winner of the event, overtook Germany's Thomas Hellriegel about three miles from the finish line to win in a non-record time of 8 hours, 20 minutes, 34 seconds. First-time winner Smyers (9:16:46) won in even more dramatic fashion by sprinting past four-time defending champion Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe in the last 400 yards. After being overtaken, Newby-Fraser collapsed, and after gathering herself, finished the final quarter mile 20 minutes later. Prep Football Roundup Punahou 27, Kamehameha 24: At Aloha Stadium, rallying from a 24- 6 halftime deficit behind a tough defense and the power running of Afa Thompson (33 carries for 203 yards), the Buffanblu (5-0) captured the ILH first-round title by overtaking the Warriors (3-2). ---- St. Louis 42, Pac-Five 6: At Aloha Stadium, the Saints--with Darnell Arceneaux passing for 97 yards and Mitchell Ige running for 82 more--scored in every quarter to improve to 4-1 in the ILH. The Wolfpack fell to 2-3. ---- Iolani 12, Damien 7: At Aloha Stadium, the Raiders (1-4) notched their first win of the regular season with the help of two second-half field goals by Jacob Huggins. Lara Anzai scored Hawaii's lone goal while Kalani High grad Carol Hatcher scored one of the Lions' two goals. Vulcans Win UH-Hilo defeated Drury State (Missouri) 15-9, 15-5, 15-5 in a women's small college volleyball match last night at the UHH Gym. Jenny Wilton contributed 12 kills, 19 digs and 5 blocks to lead the Wahine. Angelica Ljungquist added 11 kills and 7 blocks. ---- In a related story, UH received word from the Big West Conference that the University and the three Wahine volleyball players who were in a MidWeek article "did not appear to be in violation of NCAA rules." The three--Therese Crawford, Joselyn Robins, and Cia Goods--were the centerpieces for a story that included references to several businesses that had provided them with makeup and clothes for photos accompanying the article. Ironman Triathlon Today Greg Welch of Australia and Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe have returned to defend their titles in today's Ironman Triathlon that begins and ends in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. Both are vying for the $20,000 prize awarded to the top men's and women's finishers. In addition, a $100,000 bonus will be given to any man who finishes in less than 8 hours and any woman who completes the 2.4 mile swim, the 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run in under 8:45. The course records are 8:07:45 for men, set by Mark Allen in 1993, and 8:55:28 for women, set by Newby-Fraser in 1992. ---- Prep Football Roundup Farrington 26, Kalaheo 0: At Aloha Stadium, Paulson Leong scored three touchdowns, including an exhilarating 52-yard catch and run in the first quarter, to lead the Governors (3-1) to a homecoming and OIA Red Conference triumph over the Mustangs (1-3). ---- Waianae 14, Waipahu 6: At Aloha Stadium, the Seariders improved to 2-1-1 in the OIA Red Conference by defeating the Marauders (1- 3) last night. ---- Kahuku 76, Leilehua 6: At Leilehua, the Red Raiders (4-0) scored 32 first-quarter points and kept rolling to rout the Mules (1-4) in an OIA Red Conference game. Ken Faavae rushed for 147 yards and Kolo Funaki passed for 180 more for Kahuku. ---- Aiea 28, Pearl City 13: At Pearl City, in an OIA White Conference battle, Kimo Kim scored three touchdowns to lead Na Alii (4-0) to a triumph over the Chargers (2-2) ---- Roosevelt 20, McKinley 18: At Roosevelt, Aaron Ho passed for 237 yards, including the game winning TD toss to Avalanche Bento in the third quarter, as the Rough Riders improved to 3-1 in the OIA White Conference. Kiha Schultz's 38-yard fourth quarter field goal was the game winner for the Knights (3-2). ---- Waimea 24, Kapaa 13: At Vidinha Stadium, the Menehunes rallied for a 13-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Warriors in a Kauai Interscholastic League clash last night. ---- Baldwin 14, Lahainaluna 3: At War Memorial Stadium, the Bears defeated the Lunas in a hard-fought Maui Interscholastic League game last night in Wailuku. ---- Hilo at Honokaa (no score reported) Kohala at Konawaena (no score reported) Wahine Kickers Shut Out Montana defeated Hawaii 3-0 in a women's college soccer match last night at Ala Wai Field. BYU Sweeps Swords Top-ranked BYU-Hawaii defeated Chaminade 15-6, 15-4, 15-4 in a women's small college volleyball match last night at McCabe Gym. The article featured Wahine volleyball players Therese Crawford, Joselyn Robins, and Cia Goods and included photos of the three dressed in provocative evening attire. In addition, the article made references to the stores that provided the clothing, hairstyling, and make-up for the three student-athletes. These references could be deemed as endorsements by the three athletes, a violation of NCAA rules. No word from Big West Conference officials has been received. Ironman Tomorrow About 1,400 triathletes from around the world will compete in the Ironman Triathlon tomorrow in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island. The race consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike race, and 26.2 mile run. Hawaii's top competitors are Brent Imomen, who finished 26th overall with a time of 9:06:00 last year, and Debbie Hornsby, the 14th woman finisher in last year's Ironman and the Female Age-Group Triathlete of the Year in 1994. Molokai-to-Oahu Canoe Race Sunday While world-class triathletes gather on the Big Island on Saturday, the world's best outrigger canoe paddlers will assemble on Molokai on Sunday for the Molokai Hoe, a 41-mile race from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Duke Kahanamoku Beach fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. Among the record 90 crews entered is two-time defending champion Faaa Canoe Club of Tahiti. In 1993, Faaa blitzed to the fastest-ever channel crossing with a time of 4 hours, 55 minutes, 27 seconds. No club had ever completed the race in under five hours prior to that. HPU Hoopsters Eighth The Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team is ranked eighth in the NAIA Division I preseason poll released today. HPU, 25-9 last season, returns eight players. BYU-Hawaii is tied for 27th in the poll. Wahine Kickers Host Tourney The UH Wahine soccer team will host the Discover's Day Shootout tournament today and tomorrow at Ala Wai Field. Hawaii (1-7-2) will play Montana today and Loyola Marymount tomorrow. Nicki Arakawa (3 goals, 2 assists) and Lara Anzai (2 goals, 1 assist) are the leading scorers for the Wahine. Ranked second in the nation, the Wahine swept San Jose State 15-6, 15-9, 15-10 in a Big West Conference match at San Jose. Angelica Ljungquist and Therese Crawford had 12 and 11 kills to lead Hawaii (13-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference). The Spartans fell to 8-7 and 2-4. Hawaii continues its roadtrip with matches tomorrow and Saturday at New Mexico State (7-7). CaneFires Nix Beer Sales To avoid controversy, officials from the West Oahu CaneFires have decided not to sell beer this season at their home games at Hans L'Orange Field. Representatives from the Hawaii Winter Baseball League club said that "it is better to concentrate on the game of baseball We don't want the beer issue to distract from the game." A bill to allow liquor sales at Hans L'Orange has been working its way through the City Council the past few weeks. Council chair John Desoto, who blames the death of his son on abuse of alcohol, has made several emotional pleas against the bill. The HWBL season is set to begin on Oct. 21. Prep Sports News Punahou freshman Eri Macdonald, the daughter of Hawaii running great Duncan Macdonald, set a course record last week at the Hawaii Prep Invitational cross-country meet. Macdonald blitzed over the 2-mile course in 13 minutes, 24 seconds. Kau's Casey McGuire-Turcotte, the 1994 Hawaii high school state champion, finished second in 14:04. ---- In the Kamehameha Invitational this past weekend, 1994 boys' cross country state champ Matt Stevens continued his unbeaten string by striding to victory in 16:27 over the 3-mile course. Kamehameha's Brian Ching finished second in 17:52. Angela Rosa from Kamehameha won the 2-mile girls' race in 14:15. ---- Kamehameha will play nationally-ranked Punahou in the feature high school football game of the week Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. The Buffanblu, coming off a triumph over powerhouse St. Louis, are ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 23 in the nation. They can clinch the Interscholastic League of Honolulu first round title with a victory over the No. 4 Warriors. ---- In the OIA, this week's top matchups pit Farrington (2-1) against Kalaheo, Aiea (3-0) against Pearl City (2-1) and Radford (3-0) against Moanalua (2-1). Ah Mow, Freitas Feted UH athletes Robyn Ah Mow and Glenn Freitas were named the Quarterback Club Sportspersons of the Month for September. Ah Mow, the setter for the Wahine volleyball team, led Hawaii to 12 wins last month and earned all-tournament honors at Wahine Classic and the Imua Wahine Challenge. Freitas, a junior quarterback, led the Bow gridders to two straight triumphs. Morris Fifth Hawaii's Rodney "Rocket" Morris ended up in fifth in the 128- player U.S. Open billiards tournament in Virginia. Morris, 24, is ranked 10th on the Professional Billiards tour. Run to the Sun Clyde Matsumoto from California won the 36.2 mile Run to the Sun on Saturday on Maui. Matsumoto finished the course, which began in Wailuku and ended at the summit of Haleakala, in 5 hours, 26 minutes, 23 seconds. Runnerup Frank Pugliese from Honolulu finished in 5:56:13. Kathy Barcia, a former Hawaii prep sensation and now a third-grade teacher at Fern Elementary School in Kalihi, was the first wahine finisher with a time of 6:32:37. A preliminary optional mini-camp began yesterday with five players--either rookies or free-agent hopefuls--in attendance. Said former Laker great Jerry West, now executive vice president of basketball operations for the club: "It's good to be back. We are thankful the lockout is over and we will have a season." The Lakers, after a week of working out in the steamy environs of Klum, will meet the Seattle Supersonics at Blaisdell Arena on Oct. 13 and 14 in a pair of pre-season games. Wahine Still Second The UH Wahine volleyball team maintained the second spot in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll released yesterday. In addition to being second nationally, the Wahine share the Big West Conference lead with Santa Barbara, both of whom have 5-0 league marks. After sweeping two matches from Pacific last weekend at home, Hawaii returns to action tonight with a road game against San Jose State. This week's honoree is Aletha Gomez, a 5-10 outside hitter who earned the award for averaging 10 kills, 4.5 blocks, and 13 digs in matches against Hawaii Pacific and Cal State-Northridge. Seasider teammate Anik Valiengo won the award the past two weeks. ---- The NAIA Top 25 Poll was also announced today and BYU-Hawaii remained atop the rankings with a 12-1 record. Lewis-Clark St. (18-0), St. Mary's [Texas] (16-1), Fresno Pacific (18-1) and Puget Sound (9-0) round out the top five. ---- UH-Hilo (14-3) is ranked fourth in the AVCA Division II Coaches Poll. The Vulcans also lead the Pacific West Conference with a 6-0 record. ---- Chaminade upset Hawaii Pacific 4-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-10, in a women's college volleyball match last night at Kawaiahao Gym. Ulia Fotu had 13 kills to lead the Silverswords (3-10). The Sea Warriors, despite Solene Duvachelle's 22 kills, fell to 5-5. Prep Coaches Split: Pay too low Most of them do it for love. But love can't pay the bills as many local high school coaches are finding out. According to school officials, keeping successful coaches around for an extended period of time is becoming increasingly difficult because coaches--when hours on the job are factored in--are paid the equivalent of minimum wage. Said Radford athletic director Jim Alegre, himself a longtime basketball honcho for the Rams who was forced to resign because of a new league rule prohibiting AD's from holding coaching positions: "It's hard to maintain them over a long period of time. Pay is not up to par with other states. If we can keep (coaches) around for five years, that's good." Varsity football head coaches for Hawaii's public schools are paid $2,013 for the season. Coaches of most other varsity sports are paid $1,543. Although exact figures are not available, coaches at Hawaii's private schools are paid slightly higher than their public school counterparts. Freitas, a junior and a former Waianae High star, scored four touchdowns and passed for another. Averaging 16 points per game, he is tied for first in the NCAA per-game scoring category. Strickland Gets Shot Former Hawaii Pacific All-American John Strickland has been invited to the preseason camp of the NBA's New York Knicks. The 6-foot-8, 250 pound Strickland was the only rookie to work out with the Knick veterans last Friday following a four-day free agent tryout with 15 other players. "He's an (Anthony) Mason clone, except he can probably handle the ball better," said HPU coach Tony Selitto. "There's no substitute for winning," said Wagner amidst a throng of well-wishers at a post- game gathering at his room in the Stardust Hotel. "We've made some progress. It's hard to say how much. But being 2-2 is better than being 0-4 or 1-3." The Rainbows have a bye week and return to action on Oct. 14 for a road game against New Mexico. Hawaii's schedule for the rest of the season is as follows: Oct. 14--at New Mexico Oct. 21--Central Florida Oct. 28--at Brigham Young Nov. 4--Fresno State Nov. 11--at Colorado State Nov. 18--San Diego State Nov. 25--Air Force Dec. 2--Oklahoma State Pigg, Laiti Win Triathlon Mike Pigg and Lisa Laiti won the men's and women's titles of the first-ever Waikiki Beach Triathlon which was marred by the death of one of athletes competing in the event. Pigg, a well-known pro triathlete from Arcata, Calif., breezed to a two-minute win in the triple-sport event that included a 1.5-kilometer swim, 40- K bike ride, and 10-K run. In the wahine competition, Laiti overtook Sian Welch in the final two miles of the run to capture the crown. Pigg's and Laiti's triumphs were overshadowed by the death of a 52-year-old competitor from Kaneohe, who was struck by a tour bus near the intersection of Piikoi and Beretania Streets while riding his bike. He died three hours later at Queen's Medical Center. Vulcans Top Anchorage Rhondda Pheloung pounded 18 kills and Tanya Fuamatu ripped 13 more to lead UH-Hilo to 15-7, 15-7, 15-9 triumph over Alaska- Anchorage in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match last night at the UHH Gym. The win boosted the Vulcans to 14-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference while the Seawolves fell to 7-9 and 1-5. The Vulcans' next match is on Thursday when they host Drury College. Tennis Strokes Rick Fried and Don Andrews captured two titles apiece at yesterday's Manele Bay Jr. Vets/Seniors Championships on Lanai. Fried won both the men's 45s and the men's 50s titles while Andrews capture the men's 55s and 60s crowns. Other winners were Dave Andrews in the men's 35s, Tucker Dacey in the women's 35s, Audrey Maeshiro in the women's 45s, and Hattie Somerville in the women's 55s. A crowd of 15,764, more than half of whom were from or rooting for Hawaii, saw several Bows put forth outstanding efforts in the triumph, including --freshman phenom George Ornellas who rushed for 139 yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 33 yards; --quarterback Glenn Freitas, who passed for 103 yards and operated Hawaii's spread option attack efficiently; --and Punahou Aina, who had 11 tackles to lead a Bow defense that is gradually improving with each game; "This is like getting a royal flush," said Freitas in the afterglow of yesterday's victory. "We're back up," said guard Marcus Malepeai. "Everything is starting to look good again." The Bows' next game is on Oct. 14 when they travel to Albuquerque to face WAC foe New Mexico. Prep Football Roundup Punahou 21, St. Louis 13: The Buffanblu broke a 7-all halftime deadlock with two second half touchdowns to upset the Saints before an Aloha Stadium crowd of 14,357 last night. Afa Thompson rushed for 108 yards and Jimmy Bennett passed for 127 more for the Puns (4-0). Therese Crawford and Angelica Ljungquist had 10 kills apiece for the second-ranked Wahine (12-0). Northridge fell to 1-16. The two teams meet again tonight. Bows Face Rebels Today The UH football team (1-2) will square off against Nevada-Las Vegas (1-3) today at 4:07 HST at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Rebels are a young team, with half of their 85 scholarship players being either freshmen or sophomores. "We're trying to build something here," said UNLV coach Jeff Horton. The Rainbows also look to continue to build-up their once-shattered confidence with a second-straight victory. Washington is a 6-foot, 240 pounder from Los Angeles while Alualu, a 6-foot, 221- pounder, is a St. Louis High grad. Crawford Emerges After enduring a hot-and-cold freshman year, UH Wahine volleyball player Therese Crawford has improved her game dramatically and is now consistently putting down a double-digit kill total in every match. What prompted the transformation from a freshman season where she played spectacularly at times but terribly at others to the current season where Crawford leads the Wahine in kills and digs? "She's worked real hard," said UH coach Dave Shoji of the 5-foot-10, 19-year-old Michigan native. "Her technique is so much better. She's just hit a ton of balls (over the summer) and gotten better." Crawford and her Wahine teammates, 11-0 and ranked second in the country, take on Cal State-Northridge (1-15) tomorrow night at the Special Events Arena. Small College Wahine Volleyball BYU-Hawaii assured itself of the home court advantage in the playoffs by defeating Hawaii Pacific 16-14, 15-6, 15-10 last night at Kawaiahao Gym. Becky Laubach and Daniela Carneiro had 12 kills apiece for the Seasiders (11-1). Solene Duvachelle led HPU (5-4) with 15 kills. ---- Ignited by Hinano Warfield's 23 kills, Chaminade topped Alaska- Anchorage 16-14, 15-12, 15-7 last night at McCabe Gym. Prep Football Beat It'll be No. 1 versus No. 2 when St. Louis squares off against Punahou in the feature game of an Interscholastic League of Honolulu tripleheader Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. Both teams are 3-0. The Saints, on a quest for their tenth straight ILH and Prep Bowl titles, are led by returning all-state quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, who has passed for 645 yards and 10 touchdowns in the first three games, and speedy receivers Kekama Akana and Eddie Kealoha. Meanwhile, the Buffanblu--the league's top offensive producers as far as yardage (379.3 per game) and points (35.6 per contest)--are propelled by signal- caller Jimmy Bennett (611 yards and 8 TD passes) and receivers Tafiti Uso and Kaeo Vasconcellos. "There are a lot of athletes who can make the big play," said Punahou coach Dan Morrison. Allegations about favoritism have been raised following the reinstatement of four University of Hawaii football players who were formerly on academic probation. The four--wide receiver Brannon Kennedy, defensive lineman Morrie Roe, cornerback Charles Towns and linebacker Shawn Harris--each missed at least one of Rainbows' first two games because of "insufficient grade-point averages." All have regained eligibility in the last two weeks. When asked if any special favors were asked to secure the players' eligibility, UH athletic director Hugh Yoshida denied such, claiming that "they were treated like any other student. In some situations," said Yoshida, "a student-athlete missed a class or an assignment. Those were made up. In other situations it was just a matter of (changing an incomplete into a withdrawal)." Wahine Still No. 2 The UH Wahine volleyball team maintained the second spot in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Poll released yesterday. Nebraska, sparked by freshman sensation Fiona Nepo from University High, is the No. 1 team in the country. Valiengo and her Seasider teammates, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, will face Hawaii Pacific tonight at Kawaiahao Gym. A victory will clinch the home court advantage in the playoffs for BYUH. ---- Alaska-Anchorage (6-6) is in town and will meet Chaminade (1-9) tonight and tomorrow. Yesterday, UH skipper Les Murakami announced that outfield Reed Souza has transferred to a California JC to improve his grades. UH DB to Redshirt Acknowledged by his coaches as the UH football team's best defensive back, Doe Henderson falls into the hard-to-replace category this season, one which the Rainbows will need every able-bodied player. But the Bows will have to do without the services of Henderson, a three-year starter in the secondary, because an aggravating back injury has forced him seek a medical redshirt. This report and a small archive of past reports are available via World Wide Web at this URL: http://www.hawaii.edu/~turner/sports/hsports.html Offshore Paddles to Record Propelled by following seas, favorable winds, and a strong collection of seasoned paddlers, Offshore Canoe Club from Newport Beach, Calif. sprinted to a record-breaking victory in the 20th Annual Na Wahine O Ke Kai outrigger canoe race from Molokai to Oahu. It was the fourth consecutive year Offshore has won the race. After enduring a rough-and-tumble start that included collisions or near-collisions between several of the 49 crews who started yesterday's 41-mile race, Offshore raced to a lead it would never relinquish, finishing the crossing with a time of 5 hours, 24 minutes, 32 seconds--almost 20 minutes better than the record it set in 1990. In fact, yesterday's next six finishers-- Outrigger (5:31:09), Kailua (5:36:00), Lanakila (5:41:04), Kai Opua (5:41:54), Lokahi (5:42:54) and Umbi Gumbi (5:43:22)--all finished ahead of the previous record time. Bows Savor Win For the first time in two seasons, the University of Hawaii football has won a game against a Western Athletic Conference opponent and coaches and team members reported having the first restful Sunday in a while. Coach Bob Wagner's wife Gloria reported that her husband had the first good night of sleep since the season began. For a team that had gone without a WAC victory in 1994 and that had been drubbed in its first two games this season, a victory is something to cherish. Said running back Tupu Alualu: "It's good to get that ol' feeling back. We've waited a long time to get that taste of victory in our mouths again." The Bows hope to continue on the victory march as they take on Nevada-Las Vegas Saturday at Las Vegas. "We'll work hard and be ready," promised quarterback Glenn Freitas. Takahama Triumphs Former University of Hawaii golfer Mark Takahama blitzed the field with a 11-stroke victory in the Hickam Amateur Invitational at Mamala Bay Golf Course. Takahama's 54 hole total of 14-under 202 was a tournament record. Guy Yamamoto (213), Mike Pavao (214), Chris Lucey (217), and Regan Lee (218) rounded out the top five. Newton Kayak Victor Former Hawaii resident Peter Newton won two medals in the men's singles kayak competition yesterday at the Lake Lanier Sprint Challenge at Gainesville, Georgia. Newton, a member of the 1992 Olympic team, won the gold in yesterday's 500-meter event and the bronze in the 1000. HPA's Clark Ready to Rule Fresh off of an international tour with the USA Select youth team, Hawaii Prep Academy's Sarah Clark--a two-time BIIF Volleyball Player of the Year--is looking forward to leading the Kamakani to the state tournament later this season. Clark, an agile and athletic 6-footer, carries a 3.9 grade point average at HPA and is being recruited by over 50 colleges. She plans to visit Hawaii, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara, and Stanford. Quarterback Glenn Freitas, returning to the starting lineup after sitting out last week's game against Wyoming because of a shoulder injury, rushed for 122 yards and scored four touchdowns in leading a Hawaii offensive attack that netted 394 yards on the ground. Said UH offensive coordinator Kanani Souza: "Glenn did a helluva job. He made the correct reads, the correct audibles, just did a real nice job executing the offense." With the win, Hawaii--who will travel to Las Vegas to play UNLV next weekend--improved its record to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. UTEP fell to 1-3 Sumo Tournament Final Results In the battle of the yokozunas, Takanohana put an exclamation point on his Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament championship by forcing out Akebono on the final day. Takanohana, the winner of three consecutive tournaments and eleven overall, finished with a perfect 15-0 mark. Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) finished at 12-3. In other matches involving wrestlers from Hawaii, ozeki Musashimaru (Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani) ended the tourney with a 10-5 mark after losing to Takanohana's brother Wakanohana (10-5), and Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) improved to 5-10 after topping Kotonowaka (4-11). Wahine College Soccer The UH Wahine battled Utah to a 3-3 tie in a women's college soccer match yesterday at Los Angeles, Calif. Lara Anzai scored two goals and Jennifer Asano added one for the Wahine (1-5-1). Pro Beach Volleyball Holly McPeak and Nancy Reno topped Cammy Ciarelli and Barbara Fontana Harris 15-7 in the championship match of the Best of the Beach women's pro beach volleyball tournament at Nawiliwili Park on Kauai. The title was the fifth in a row this season for McPeak and Reno, who each earned $5,000 yesterday. It was the 11th victory without a loss for the Wahine this season. Battling a tough Pacific block, Joselyn Robins led Hawaii with 17 kills while Angelica Ljungquist, Therese Crawford, and Jenny Wilton added 16, 16, and 15 respectively. Kamehameha grad Rebecca Downey led the No. 10 Tigers (4-4) with 19 kills. Title to Takanohana Grand champion Takanohana clinched his third consecutive title and 11th overall with the help of his older brother Wakanohana, who upset yokozuna Akebono yesterday in the Autumn Grand Sumo Tourney in Tokyo. Wakanohana, an ozeki (champion), sidestepped a charging Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) and slapped him down. Wakanohana improved to 9-5 while Akebono dropped to 12-2. In the preceding match, Takanohana won his 14th consecutive match of the tournament by overpowering Musashimaru [10-4] (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae). Bows versus Miners Tonight The UH Rainbows (0-2) look to capture their first victory of the season when they take on Texas-El Paso (1-2) in a Western Athletic Conference tonight at Aloha Stadium. In a positive development, Hawaii's best receiver Brannon Kennedy was re- instated yesterday after making up coursework for a Spring semester class. Kennedy sat out the Bows' first two games while working to regain his eligibility. Rallying from a 6-14 deficit in Game 3, the Wahine--the nation's second- ranked team--almost swept the No. 10 Tigers. Therese Crawford (23 kills), Angelica Ljungquist (20 kills, 8 blocks) and setter Robyn Ah Mow (56 assists) sparked the Wahine (10-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big West). Former Kamehameha star Rebecca Downey had 19 kills for Pacific (4-3 and 0-1). Freitas Returns After sitting out last weekend's game because of a shoulder injury, quarterback Glenn Freitas has recovered and will return to the starting lineup Saturday night for the Rainbows' game against Texas-El Paso. According to UH quarterback coach Michael Carter, the coaching staff was concerned about Freitas' ability to throw the ball effectively coming off the injury. In practice, the former Waianae star has fared well. "He's throwing it fine now," said Carter. Sumo Day 13 Results Yokozuna Takanohana improved to 13-0 after defeating Musoyama (7-6) yesterday in the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo. Takanohana is one win up on fellow grand champion Akebono [Chad Rowan of Waimanalo] (12-1)--a victor over Musashimaru [Waianae's Fiamalu Penitani] (10-3) yesterday. Takanohana will face Musashimaru today and Akebono tomorrow. In another match yesterday, Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) lost to Hamanoshima (3-10) and fell to 4-9. Cartwright to be Feted A celebration in honor of Alexander Cartwright, the man who is credited with founding baseball 150 years ago in 1845, will be held tomorrow at the Makiki field named in his honor. A native of New York, Cartwright organized the world's first baseball team-- the Knickerbockers--in his home state and then moved to Honolulu where he lived for over 40 years, enjoying successful career as an attorney and businessman. Vulcans Up-End Seasiders With Tanya Fuamatu slamming 20 kills and Rhondda Pheloung adding 15 more, UH-Hilo upset BYU-Hawaii 16-14, 7-15, 15-5, 4-15, 15-9 in a women's small college volleyball match last night at the UH- Hilo Gym. Takanohana, the winner of ten tournaments, improved to 12-0 in his quest for an 11th title by defeating Kotonishiki (9-3) yesterday. In the final match of the day, Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan), seeking his ninth tournament championship, fell to 11-1 when ozeki Takanonami (7-5) pushed him out. Earlier, ozeki Musashimaru [Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae] (10-2) kept his faint title hopes alive by driving out Misugisato (4-8), and Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe of Nanakuli) dropped to 4-8 after dropping his match to Oginishiki (4-8). Wahine-UOP Meet Tonight, Tomorrow The University of Hawaii versus University of the Pacific match- up, one of best rivalries in women's volleyball, will end at the completion of this season when the Wahine terminate their membership in the Big West Conference. In the 19 years the two teams have competed against one another, Hawaii has won 30 matches and 4 national titles (1979, '82, '83, and '87) while Pacific has 23 and 2 (1985 and '86). The tenth-ranked Tigers are in town for matches tonight and tomorrow at the Special Events Arena against the second-ranked Wahine. Tornado Alert for Bows If the UH football team (0-2) is going to win its first football game of the season this Saturday against Texas-El Paso (1-2), one of the players it must stifle is Toraino "The Texas Tornado" Singleton. The 6-foot-3, 243 pound Singleton, the Western Athletic Conference rushing leader with 426 yards in three games, "can do some damage," says UH defensive coordinator George Lumpkin. Apparently, Singleton can do damage on more than just the football field, for he must go to trial in February to face charges that he assaulted two men in a bar fight. Taking an innocent-until-proven-guilty approach, UTEP officials have allowed Singleton to remain on the team. Prep Football Beat The St. Louis Crusaders (2-0), ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 23 in USA Today Prep football poll, will meet Kamehameha (2-0) Friday night at Aloha Stadium in the feature high school grid matchup this weekend. Coach Cal Lee's Saints, the owners of a 21-game winning streak, are led by returning all-state quarterback Darnell Arceneaux (389 passing yards and 6 TD passes) and slotback Kekama Akana, who scored four touchdowns last week against Damien. The Warriors, coached by Blane Gaison, look to slotback Dylan Ching--the grandson of former pro wrestler Lord "Tallyho" Blears--for offensive firepower. Ching, a 5-9, 175- pound senior, had 174 all-purpose yards against Iolani last week and returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in a pre-season game against Farrington. Sports Shorts The UH Wahine cross country team will host its only home meet of the season this Saturday at the Kaneohe Clipper Course. "We're going to play hard every down. Ain't no f*ing around anymore," said linebacker Jeff Bredy, who summed up the change in attitude he and his teammates say they will embrace for the remainder of this season. The Bows--after being whipped in their first two games--will take on Texas-El Paso on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium in what coaches, players, and fans are calling a must-win game. Said offensive lineman Marcus Malepeai: "If we don't win now, when are we going to win? We have to go out and play like it's our last game and win now." Sumo Day 11 Results The deadlock between grand champions Akebono and Takanohana remains unbroken after 11 days in the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo as both rikishi notched hard-fought victories yesterday. Akebono (Waimanalo's Chad Rowan) exchanged fierce arm thrusts with Kaio (7-4) before grabbing his foe and shoving him out. Takanohana absorbed the bulldozer tactic of Tosanoumi (8-3) and after an aggressive struggle threw him to the ground. In other matches involving wrestlers from Hawaii, Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani of Waianae) improved to 9-2 by routing fellow ozeki Takanonami (6-5), and Konishiki (Nanakuli's Salevaa Atisanoe) is 4-7 after defeating Higonoumi (2-9). Ah Mow Leads Wahine While the hitters often get the most notoriety, UH volleyball coach Dave Shoji knows who ultimately has the most impact on his team's success: his setter. And he has a good one this season-- Robyn Ah Mow. According to UH volleyball coach Dave Shoji, Ah Mow belongs in the same company as former Wahine All-American setters Nahaku Brown, Cheri Boyer, Martina Cincerova, and Joyce Ka'apuni. Said Shoji of the McKinley High grad: "She's very explosive. She just doesn't look like it because she does it so easily. Graceful is a good word for her. She goes for the ball and doesn't look like she's moving, but she gets to the ball like nobody we've ever had." Ah Mow and her Wahine teammates will take their No. 2 national ranking into this Thursday and Friday's matches against No. 10 Pacific at the Special Events Arena. ---- The Wahine lead the nation in attendance, averaging 3,701 fans for their first seven home matches. Florida is second with a 3,080 per match average. Golf Shorts Hawaii golfer Damien Jamila was eliminated after losing 4 and 2 to James Taylor of Wisconsin in the third round of the 15th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Owings Mills, Md. ---- Also eliminated were two wahine golfers. In their first two games, the Bows have been steamrolled for 1,115 total yards for a per-game average of 557.5 yards. The Bows are ranked second from the worst in scoring defense, giving up an average of 45 points per game. Said UH defensive coordinator George Lumpkin: "I could do a better job as a coach and the players have to do a better job of being responsible (for carrying out their assignments)." Wahine Home After a successful 3-0 mainland road trip, the second-ranked UH Wahine volleyball team (9-0) has returned home and will meet No. 10 Pacific (4-2) Thursday and Friday at the Special Events Arena. Homegrown Report (courtesy of Dennis Anderson) Bruce Assily, 1994 first-team all-state linebacker for St. Louis, became the first true freshman to start at defensive end for Linfield College (Ore.) in more than a decade, but in the first half of his first game, Assily suffered a third-degree sprain of his right ankle and is out a minimum of three weeks.
